Diet Soft Drinks And Alcohol

Inclusion of soft drinks and alcohol in the diet has not been encouraged by the nutritionists of the past. However, present studies show that, a little amount of alcohol consumed daily poses no danger to an individual. Keeping the health conscious consumers in mind, the manufacturers of soft drinks have also created sugar free products. These products normally referred to as the diet sodas or light soft drinks contain sweeteners like Aspartame, Saccharin and Cyclamates. These are especially marketed for athletes, obese people and people suffering from Diabetes.

The artificial sweeteners used in the diet friendly soft drinks are sometimes used individually and at other times they are used simultaneously with other components. However, there has been no unanimous answer with regard to the taste of these soft drinks. Aspartame popularly known by the brand name of NutraSweet is one of the most common sweeteners used in the soft drinks. However, recent studies have shown that these soft drinks increase the risk of being affected by Type 2 Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome. Consuming diet beverages for 5 years can increase the risk of developing Metabolic Syndrome by 36% and Diabetes by 67%. The reason for such effects has been ascribed to the artificial sweeteners used in the beverages. Hence, these must be taken in moderation to avoid health risks.

There has been an ongoing debate about harmful effects of hard drinks as well. Are there any diet friendly alcohol choices? This is the most common question people ask. The answer is yes, as long as you take them in moderation. However, Robert C. Atkins shuns alcohol all together when on diet. The reason is that, alcohol is the first element to get burned by our body leaving out the fat cells and the carbohydrates. This fuels weight gain. If you must take alcohol, then wine is a good choice since it does not contain cholesterol, fat or sodium. In one ounce it has only 20 calories. Others include Gin, Vodka and Scotch mixed with Seltzer and diet soda. It is important to count the calories when you are on diet and wish to take alcohol. Pure alcohol constitutes 7 calories per gram, which is more than carbohydrates. Hence, if you wish to lose weight, you will do yourself a big favor by cutting down on the booze intake.
