There are a number of ways in which an individual can obtain low cost health Insurance. The first is through Group Health Insurance. This form of Health Insurance is most commonly provided by an employer, or on offer to members of an organization. These insurance plans offer wide ranging coverage coupled with affordable rates. The rates tend to be lower because the plans involve less risk to the insurers. They work on the basis that contributions are received from everyone in the group, yet it is unlikely that all members will have to make full claims. Because the insurers are getting business from a large number of people in one policy, they can also offer a greater range of health care benefits. |
Another low cost option is an HMO Plan, the Health Maintenance Organization. These plans use networks of medical professionals and services. Individuals choose a doctor from within the network to act as their Primary Health Care Professional, essentially managing their health care needs. Should they need to be referred to a specialist, their doctor is responsible for this, and will refer to them to an expert who is part of that network. Because these plans operate in such a way, they can offer lower fees, but the downside is that medical choices and benefits for the individual can be limited as a result. Fees for Services Plans offer insurance with lower monthly premiums but greater out of pocket expenses when services are used. In theory the healthier an individual remains, the less they will have to pay. However, the risk with these plans is that the higher cost of services can lead to reluctance in seeking care when it is needed. Medi-Cal is health care for those with very little or no income at all. A Medi-Cal Managed Care Plan uses networks, similar to an HMO, and these plans include the basic benefits that all health plans cover, such as doctor and hospital services. Many include prescription drugs, vision and hearing care as well. However, to qualify for Medi-Cal, both income and current medical state of individuals must be assessed.
